U.S.Elsewhere: 11/10 Soccer Matchday Recap

Schalke has found a little bit of comeback magic this week.  Jermaine Jones and The Miners came back to draw with Arsenal after being down two in Champions League action in the middle of the week.  The match against Werder Bremen looked bleak for two thirds of the match until two quick goals changed Schalke’s fortune.  One of Jones’ 47 completed passes set up the winning goal scored by halftime substitute Julian Draxler.  Jones was subbed out at the beginning of second half stoppage time.  The victory kept The Royal Blues firmly in second place in the Bundesliga.

Also in Germany, an injury-laden Hoffenhein club managed a draw with Fortuna

Dusseldorf.  Hoffenheim were down to ten men for the last 40 minutes of the match but held on to get the point.  Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams went the full match for Hoffenheim with Williams having to cover for the double yellow card to central defense Marvin Compper.  It was thought that Williams would start at center back.  Hoffenheim managed a matchday low four attempts on goal, but led the Bundesliga today by winning over 54% of their tackles.

In England, Stoke City got a much needed victory against basement dweller Queens Park Rangers.  The win pushed Stoke into double digits in points.  QPR had three more attempts on target, but we unable to convert.  Geoff Cameron played the full match at right back and sent in a few threatening crosses, including one that was headed just wide by Jonathan Walters.

Tim Howard and Everton escaped with a 2-1 victory after goals in the 77th and 79th minutes at Goodison Park.  The win pulls Everton into fourth place in the Barclay’s Premier League ahead of West Brom on goal differential.  Howard made four saves on the day as Everton took over the match.  The Toffees have a chance to build a win streak as they take on Reading next weekend.

Eric Lichaj was not in the 18 that suffered a comeback defeat to Manchester United.  Brad Guzan was in goal but a Javier Hernandez goal in the 88th minute completed the comeback from down 2-0 for Man U.  The second half was a build up of momentum as Aston Villa tried to hold the Premier League leaders at bay, but Guzan would see 17 shots.  The loss keepsVilla three points clear of relegation.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Jozy Altidore scored again for AZ Alkmaar leveling the match at 2-2.  The game ended in a draw after the 64th minute goal by Altidore. He keeps finding the net and has seemed to find his way back to the USMNT.
