Clint Dempsey and Tottenham only needed a draw to advance to the next stage in the Europa League. A 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos FC secured second place in Group J moving the Spurs on to the round of 32. They joined Liverpool as English Premier League teams to advance on Thursday. Spurs were tied at the 54th minute but scored twice in six minutes to take the win. Dempsey played 80 minutes in a match that was separated by an own goal from Panathinaikos keeper Orestis Karnezis.
In other Thursday Europa League action, Joshua Gatt went 68 minutes in a 1-0 win for Molde over Stuttgart. Molde is eliminated from the round of 32 finishing last in Group E.
Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna secured a 1-0 despite being down a man for the entire second half. Boyd came in for the last 14 minutes and stoppage. Unfortunately, this was the only time Rapid secured points finishing last in the group.
Alejandro Bedoya scored a goal in the 21st minute for Helsingborg in a 3-1 win over Twente. Helsingborg finished third in Group L.
Winning Group L was Hannover 96 and Steve Cherundolo. The captain played the final 20 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Levante today. The match was squared by Levante in the 90 + 4 minute.
