Today Abby Wambach was named the winner of the Ballon d’Or by FIFA as the best female soccer player in the world joining Mia Hamm as the only U.S. players to take home the award.  Wambach always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and won most balls in the air in part to her teammate, and finalist, Alex Morgan.  Morgan expects to have many chances to win player of the year, but for now it is Wambach’s time.  She was humble as always after winning as seen in this interview.

I mean honestly, I thought maybe Hope made a mistake.  I don’t know.  I couldn’t believe it.  I was sure Alex was going to win.

Wambach credited her teammates for the award.  The way she carries herself is remarkable and she makes the Charles Barkley role model debate easy to contradict.  Wambach is a great player to mold a game after and we congratulate her.

Pia Sundhage also won Coach of the Year and sang during her acceptance speech.

Oh yeah, some guy named Messi won the Men’s award.
