Earlier in the week Toronto FC decided to go with Ryan Nelson as their new coach. The issue is that he is still a defender for Queens Park Rangers. The 35 year old got the start against Tottenham yesterday and played a stellar match along with the rest of his squad holding the Spurs to a scoreless draw. Nelson made a few vital clearances in the match as Tottenham had many of the good scoring chances. Dempsey came on as a second half substitute but was still unable to help generate a goal as the Spurs stayed in fourth place in the table.
The move for Nelson reunited him with Kevin Payne. He is under contract until June, so it is unclear when he will join the MLS side.
A scoreless draw for Everton allowed the Spurs to keep their position as Tim Howard recorded his first clean sheet in the Premier League since September. Swansea only managed two shots on target although one required a nice click over the bar by Howard. Everton is three points clear of Arsenal in fifth place.
Geoff Cameron and Stoke City were on the end of their worst home loss since 2008 as Chelsea won by the count of 4-0. Stoke had their chances but could not capitalize. Stoke’s Jonathan Walters managed two own goals and missed a penalty. The loss has Stoke in a pile of teams at the middle of the table.
In Mexico, Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo played the full match in a 1-0 for Tijuana over Club Leon. They had to hold the lead for 83+ minutes after a seventh minute goal by Alfredo Moreno. Castillo earned a yellow card in the 38th minute, but his team escaped with their second victory in as many weeks.
Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna were on the winning end as well. Their 2-0 victory over Guadalajara was spurred by a brace from Oribe Peralta. Gomez went 89 minutes in the midfield for Laguna managing two shots on goal.
DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco Fiscal both started for Puebla in a 1-1 draw with Toluca. Beasley was substituted in the 69th minute after two shots on goal with Orozco going the full match. Jose Fransisco Torres and Tigres finish week two in the Primera against Atlante at 7 pm ET tonight.
Finally, the Bundesliga returns this week with many warm up matches ending today. The Friday match will feature Schalke and Hannover with Steve Cherundolo and Jermaine Jones expecting to feature. This video says Jones is a must-have midfielder.
