U.S. Elsewhere: Altidore Nets Three, Shea To Potters

Jozy Altidore was anxiously awaiting the return of play in the Eredivisie based on his play today.  He netted a hat trick in a 4-1 for AZ Alkmaar over Vitesse Arnhem.  It was an impressive win for Alkmaar against the fifth place squad moving Altidore’s squad up to the 11th position.  Altidore was given great service on the day as he scored on two headers and one close range shot.  However, it was clear that he knew exactly where to be to provide a target for his teammates.  The goals gave him 14 on the year in the Dutch League and were scored in a 15 minute span.  You can check out one of the goals after the jump.!

Late yesterday it looked like the transfer of Brek Shea to Stoke City was off but the two teams continued to talk.  Today Stoke’s manager, Tony Pulis, confirmed that Shea will be doing a one week training with the Potters as a condition of the transfer.  If all goes well, it looks like Shea will move to the Premier League for an approximate fee of £2.2m.  Shea is coming off an injury and has been rehabbing.  He may have worn out his welcome in Dallas with coach Schellas Hyndman so a move could be wise for all parties.

Stoke are in desperate need of offense as the side fell 3-1 to Swansea today.  All goals came in the second half but Stoke looked sluggish from the onset.  Geoff Cameron played the full match for Stoke who are now in 10th place in the table, four points back of the Swans.  Shea is versatile and could add some more options in the attack but will have to prove his worth over the likes of Michael Owen, today’s scorer for City, and Mathew Etherington.

Aston Villa allowed a two goal lead to slip away today as they ended in a 2-2 draw with West Brom.  Brad Guzan featured in net and Eric Lichaj was brought on in the fifth minute after an injury to Nathan Baker.  Lichaj was given a yellow for a hard tackle as West Brom began to press for goals.  A Wigan loss allowed Aston Villa to sneak out of the relegation zone by one point.

In Germany Hoffenheim and Gladbach played to a scoreless draw as Fabian Johnson went the full match For TSG.  Danny williams came on in the 36th minute.  Mainz and Freiburg also finished 0-0 but U.S. eligible player Shawn Parker earned two yellows in the final four minutes of regulation.  He came into the match in the 68th minute and was quickly escorted out.
