1/29 Afternoon Soccer News: Altidore Scores Against Racism

Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar took part in their next match in the Dutch KNVB Cup today.  Their opponent was Den Bosch who had been fined in 2011 for obscene chants.  Unfortunately, today those chants were racist and aimed at Jozy Altidore.  There were chants of “monkey” and projectiles coming from the crowd.  Despite that Altidore asked to play on.  He also then drew a penalty and rightfully converted it to widen his team’s lead.  The match was eventually suspended but allowed to resume.

AZ won easily by the count of 4-0 and will move on to the semifinals of the Cup.  Den Bosch should get an even heftier fine.  Altidore now has 20 goals this year in all competitions.  The video is below.

Altidore urges play on.

AZ inked Aron Johansson to possibly replace Altidore should he leave this summer.  The U.S. eligible forward signed on through 2017.

Conor O”Brien has a new team as well.  The midfielder joins Danish side FC Nordsjælland on a two year contract.  Michael Parkhurst just left this team that was O’Brien first choice.

Roger Espinoza recorded an assist in his first Premier League match for Wigan today.  The Honduran is facing Geoff Cameron, much like he will on February 6th.
