Former RSL Academy product Donny Toia nearly made it an even more forgettable evening for Sporting Kansas City. The MLS squad held on for a 1-1 draw against FC Tucson of the semi-pro USL Premier Development League on the first day of the Tucson friendlies, but not before Toia twice coming close to striking a go-ahead goal in the first half before Sporting regrouped in the second 45.
Kansas City scored first in the 7th minute, striker Soony Saad heading in a cross from Chance Myers for an early 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, the score was once again deadlocked when Patrick Wallen completed a run on goal for the equalizer. The hosts were buoyed by the goal, and pressed forward looking for the lead. Toia, a 20-year-old Tucson native who signed with his hometown squad last spring, nearly converted a pair of quality chances but failed to find the back of the net.
Sporting turned up the pressure in the second half, looking more confident and assertive, but the effort was unable to crack Tucson’s defense for a winner and the score remained even at the final whistle. Kansas City returns to the pitch on Friday to face the Portland Timbers, while FC Tucson plays their next friendly on Feb. 8 — also against the Timbers.
