Revisiting the U.S. Vs Canada Friendly, Somehow

It took us a day to come to writing about the friendly against Canada given just how uninspiring it was in all facets.  There is a silver lining in everything but during the game the only positive was the competition on twitter to come up with the snarkiest or funniest “I just fell asleep” joke. So what can we take away?

Gonzo and Besler did their job
Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler were not tested much on the night although the best scoring chances came from Dwayne De Rosario. One was a scramble play and the other was created when Justin Morrow pinched in too far. However, Besler and Gonzalez kept a good high line and narrowed the pitch. They both completed long passes but Besler struck the pass of the night with a 45 yard diagonal right on target. Besler also took home the game ball.

The starting XI did not work.
Denmark attacked Canada out wide scoring early and often. The person supplying the most width early was Morrow. Tony Beltran could not find the runs. When Josh Gatt, Alejandro Bedoya, and Juan Agudelo came in the lineup felt more threatening. Benny Feilhaber was good on set pieces and an easy improvement over Brad Evans. Evans was never going to break down a five man midfield. Feilhaber wasn’t great off the rush either but was a better starting option.

Chris Wondolowski is probably done.
He will heat up the MLS again but his time in red, white and blue is probably over. He is still on the long list for the Gold Cup but that may take an injury.

There will be bunkering.
Why won’t every hex opponent just bunker against the U.S.? Width and conversion near the goal have been constant themes under Jurgen Klinsmann. Mexico may still attack but teams will be looking to get to halftime 0-0.

Players from this camp will go to Honduras but off a body of work, not the last three weeks.
Injuries to defenders may be a part of the equation for next weeks roster but those we see from this month’s camp had the upper hand anyway. Graham Zusi, Agudelo, Gonzalez, Eddie Johnson, Besler, and Kyle Beckerman are the most likely candidates for the first hex match. Gatt tweeted that he was back with his club so it does not look like he was called in.
