Coach Klinsmann has announced the 24 player roster for the up-coming game against Honduras:

KEEPERS- Tim Howard (Everton, EPL),  Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, EPL), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire, MLS)

DEFENDERS- Tim Chandler (FC Nurnburg, Bundesliga), Fabian Johnson (1899 Hoffenhiem, Bundesliga), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City FC, EPL), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander, Liga 2), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana, Liga MX), Matt Besler (Sporting KC, MLS), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy, MLS), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC, MLS), Michael Parkhurst (FC Ausburg, Bundesliga)

MIDFIELDERS- Michael Bradley (AS Roma, Serie A), Jermaine Jones (FC Schalke 04, Bundesliga), Danny Williams (1899 Hoffenhiem, Bundesliga), Maurice Edu (Buraspor, Turkish Super Lig), Graham Zui (Sporting KC, MLS), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo, MLS), Jose Torres (Tigres, Liga MX), Sacha Kljestan (RSC Anderlecht, Belgian Pro League)

FORWARDS- Clint Dempsey (Tottenham Hotspur, EPL), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar, Eredivise), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC, MLS), Herculez Gomez (Santos Laguna, Liga MX)

Here’s a couple of facts:

  • 7 players made the squad from the January Camp
  • Breakdown of yanks across the pond (or south of the border): 5 Bundesliga players, 4 from English Premier League players (Edu omitted since he’s been loanded out & never made the pitch but he’s owned by Stoke),  3 from Liga MX, & 1 from each of the following: Eredivise, Belgian Pro League, Turkish Super Lig, & Serie A.
  • Steve Cherundolo is sidelined with a knee injury and was not available for selection (via US Soccer).
  • Five players are carrying yellow cards: Michael Bradley, Dempsey, Maurice Edu, Fabian Johnson, and Zusi. Their next caution will result in a one-match suspension (via US Soccer).

Here’s some initial reactions/thoughts:

  • Even though he’s been playing well, I’m shocked to see Torres on the roster. Unless Coach K is willing to play he where he belongs (deep lying playmaker), I don’t see the point.
  • Speaking of not seeing the point, why is Edu on this roster? He just moved to Turkey via a loan and I question his match fitness.
  • Some notable omissions: Lichaj (I’m a biased AVFC fan), Feilhaber, Onyewu, Goodson,  Agudelo, & Boyd.
  • Coach K is taking the “Altidore Tough Love” approach with Diskeruud. He called him out just before the Canada friendly & at the time I wasn’t sure if it was to light a fire under him before the game or to put him in his place. After not making the gameday squad, I think we all know the answer.
  • I guess Wondolowski blew his chance.
