MLS Orlando Friendlies: Bobby Convey Leads Sporting Kansas City to Win Over Old Team

At one time he was a former DC United starter, the youngest player then signed in MLS history. A decade after leaving the Beltway, Bobby Convey struck the blow that propelled Sporting to the victory over his former club.

For most of the match neither side could crack through the other’s defenses as Sporting Kansas City and DC United — last year’s top two teams during the regular season in the Eastern Conference — dueled on the pitch at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando. Deep into the second half both teams were staring at a scoreless draw.

Then Convey rounded up the ball on the left side of the pitch and cut in toward goal. Rifling a shot from 18 yards out, the 14-year veteran scorched substitute United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to give Kansas City the lead in the 74th minute. The goal seemed to deflate United and bolster Sporting’s attack, which continued to push forward despite major substitutions soon after Convey’s goal.

Soony Saad, who returned to the pitch in Orlando after an injury scare last week against the Portland Timbers, scored the buffer in the 81st minute. Beating the DC offside trap, Saad collected a through ball from Haitian midfielder Peterson Joseph and calmly potted it past Dykstra for his second goal of the preseason.

Both teams are level with a win and a loss in their group at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. DC will take on the undefeated Montreal Impact in the early game on Saturday; Sporting face the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL in the night match.
