Morning Aggregate: MLS Jersey Week Continues, Corona, Castillo Score for Xolos

Jersey week in Major League Soccer enters day three after Toronto and Philadelphia released their new jerseys last night.  Toronto’s jersey features a maple leaf as an ode to the local area while Philadelphia pays tribute to the local soccer heritage.  Los Angeles, Montreal, Seattle, and Vancouver are set to release new jerseys tomorrow before Portland caps the week on Thursday.  Seattle is set to release two jerseys.

Toronto went with the large maple leaf as the focal point of their kit.  There is a series of geometric shapes surrounding the leaf said to represent the many parts of the organization.  Toronto went with a full team jersey release for their event, or almost.  There is also an updated color and the inclusion of the “All for One” slogan.

The Philadelphia Union decided to channel the Bethlehem Steel, a five time U.S. Open Cup winner, with their new tertiary jersey.  There is a B on the front of the jersey and the years of the Steel are also displayed on the black and white jersey.  The Union logo is actually felt although the rest of the jersey is still high tech fabric.  The prominent Bimbo logo is also in a different font, although somewhat Charlie Brown looking with the zig zag.  Given the reviews, the Union jersey may be the winner after two days of events with soccer history a clear winner as well.

The United States U20 team beat Canada last night to advance to next year’s World Cup.  Their opponent will be Cuba after the scored the game winner against Costa Rica in the 84th minute.

Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo started for Club Tijuana in Copa Libertadores action last night.  They took on CD San José of Bolivia in group play and Castillo opened the scoring with a fourth minute goal that you can see in the video below.  Corona could not be outdone as he added a goal in the 49th minute to put Xolos up 3-0, which is also below.  The win gave Xolos a commanding lead in Group 5 as they await the result of today’s match between Millonarios and Corinthians.

Finally the North American Soccer League expansion team went with a familiar formula sticking with the name of Fury.
