Is Brad Guzan ready to take over for Tim Howard…now?

I know that it’s probably sacrilegious to put this out there, but has anyone noticed how well Guzan has been playing? Well, odds are no because a) He just became a starter for Aston Villa this year and b) you might be thinking: “what team is that?” and last but not least, c) Aston Villa suck.I’ve been a fan of Aston Villa for several years now and so I’ve been keeping track of his performances. Brad Guzan has been putting on amazing performances just like he did Monday against Manchester City. While Guzan continues to impress, Tim Howard has had a sub par year for his club (it’s still decent it’s just that we’re used to him being awesome). Here’s their stats for this season (I got them from ESPN):

Brad Guzan: 25 games played, 86 saves, & 5 clean sheets

Tim Howard: 27 games played, 66 saves, & 4 clean sheets

Of course stats don’t give us the whole picture. For example, Howard just broke his 210 game EPL starting streak due to injury and he’s probably been having issues for a while since he’s not one to just sit out a match. Also, Guzan has probably faced more shots than Tim since, you know, Aston Villa isn’t very good. However, Aston Villa happen to have the worse Goal Differential in the EPL and yet Brad has one more clean sheet in two less games.

I am not advocating for Brad to take over the top spot but my point is that if this pattern continues, Brad may have a puncher’s chance to take over that spot by Brazil. Long term, I could see Howard hanging it up Internationally to pave way for Guzan to become the top keeper since Tim will be in his mid-30s after the next World Cup cycle is done.
