A much rumored friendly between the U.S. Men’s National Team and Belgium became official yesterday. The two nations will play on May 29th in Cleveland. This test will be smashed around World Cup qualifiers and Gold Cup preparation. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann believes this match will be great preparation.
Belgium is definitely a team on the rise. If you look at their roster, they have quality players from top to bottom who are on some of the biggest clubs in Europe. It’s a big opportunity for us and a great way to start the summer as we prepare for the World Cup qualifiers.
The U.S. lost to Belgium in the third match under Klinsmann. There is also a long rumored match with Germany expected in the same week. This will be one of the most active times of the year for the USMNT, thus the expanded roster will be vital.
This week’s Major League Soccer power rankings are up at Soccer Perspectives. The Galaxy remain in the top slot despite being off last week. Montreal, Vancouver, and Philadelphia make the biggest jumps while Columbus slipped five slots. In my individual rankings, the Chicago Fire slipped to last after two very disappointing performances.
Billionaire Phil Anschutz will retain ownership to the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). AEG owns the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo although the now former CEO Tim Leiweke will not have a say in the future vision of the entertainment company. It is yet to be seen just what this means for the Galaxy and Dynamo.
Finally, if you plan on watching MLS this weekend for rivalry week the league is running a contest for each game via social media. More information here.
