Darel Russell Saves Point for Toronto FC Against FC Dallas

Last weekend Toronto FC felt the sting of a late comeback. This weekend Toronto made FC Dallas feel the same pain, scoring two goals in the final ten minutes to erase a 2-0 deficit and force the draw in front of more than 16,000 at BMO Field. Thinking they were about to walk away from Canada with a fourth straight victory, Dallas fell asleep defensively in the waning moments as the home side instead nabbed their second straight draw.

The Toros had gone up in the first half when Andrew Jacobsen finished off headed pass from Kenny Cooper to beat Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik off a corner kick play in the 34th minute. Less than a quarter-hour after the restart from the intermission, Dallas had doubled their lead when John Bostock was dispossessed by Michel. As the ball found Jackson surging forward, the Brazilian midfielder served a long ball to Blas Perez. Beating defender Darel Russell to the pass, Perez scored his second goal in as many weeks for Dallas.

Toronto continued to sputter offensively until Dallas gifted a goal and restored some confidence for the hosts. A badly headed clearance attempt by center back Matt Hedges flew over the head of Dallas keeper Raul Fernandez. Pouncing on the mistake was late substitute Justin Braun, who had entered the match just a dozen minutes before for John Bostock in his first appearance of the season. Tapping the ball into the open net, Braun’s first goal for his new club rejuvenated their attack and boosted a sense of hope.

That hope was rewarded five minutes later when Russell atoned for his earlier inability to stop Perez. Pushing the ball up the flank, he blasted a darting shot from more than twenty yards out that fooled Fernandez and leveled the match. After their attack had looked anemic for almost the entire match, Toronto had improbably equalized the match and experienced the flip side of last weekend’s agony.
