Seattle Sounders Still Winless in 2013 After Draw with New England Revolution

Sigi Schmid guaranteed the Seattle Sounders would win their first match of the season when they hosted the New England Revolution on Saturday. But, in front of more than 38,000 fans at CenturyLink Field, Schmid’s promise rang hollow as the Sounders were held to a scoreless draw by the visitors. The tie kept Seattle in the cellar of the Western Conference, the only MLS team yet to notch a victory in league play in 2013.

Despite failing to get a single shot on net to challenge Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, the Revs are able to head back home to the other side of the continent. This is largely thanks to their own keeper, Bobby Shuttleworth, who along with his back line faced a barrage of shots by Seattle. Lucky to enter the locker room level at the intermission, New England’s continued defensive tenacity started to frustrate Seattle the longer they failed to break through.

The forward combination of Steve Zakuani and Lamar Neagle created plenty of scoring chances, but the Sounders simply couldn’t finish off their opportunities. Part of the credit goes to the New England defense, some to Shuttleworth, but in large part it was simply a matter of sloppy finishing by Seattle that prevented them from nabbing that first win and keeping their coach from looking the fool.

Instead Seattle will head once again to the drawing board, hoping next week’s visit to Colorado yields a better result. The Revolution return to New England lucky to claim another point to at least temporarily move ahead of Chicago and DC United in the Eastern Conference standings.
