Morning Aggregate: Capital Soccer Classic, Tim Howard’s 100th Clean Sheet

The inaugural Capital Soccer Classic at Gallaudet University’s Hotchkiss Field in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, April 24 was announced yesterday.  The event will feature a plethora of politicians in a congressional competition.  However, many people tied to U.S. Soccer will appear at the charity event, including Jurgen Klinsmann, John Harkes, Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope, and Claudio Reyna.  Members of the D.C. United will also be present.  The Capital Soccer Classic benefits Soccer for Success, the foundation’s free soccer-based after-school program that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children in under-resourced urban communities.

Everton and Tim Howard faced off with Arsenal yesterday in a pivotal Barclays Premier League match.  Howard would help his team finish at a 0-0 draw with the Gunners.    The match was Howard’s 300th in the Premier League and his 100th career shut out.  The draw kept Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Everton within four points of each other as they battle for third and fourth place in the table.

Alan Gordon has been suspended three games for using a homophobic slur directed at the Portland Timbers’ Will Johnson during the match Sunday night.  It was Gordon’s first match of the season but the ugly comment was caught by television cameras.  Gordon will also pay a fine and attend sensitivity training.  MLS has backed the “Don’t Cross the Line” campaign and made it clear that they will not tolerate this type of behavior.

CONCACAF announced four inductees to join 29 others previously honored as members of the CONCACAF Hall of Fame.  None of this years honorees are from the United States but does include Panamanian Ariel Alvarado.  Alvarado led Panama to a runner up Gold Cup finish in 2005 behind the U.S.

D.C. United is back to looking at Maryland for the home of its new stadium.

The president of Brazil’s Fluminense soccer club, Peter Siemsen, is determined to own a club in the United States.  Last Saturday he spoke to a crowd at an event sponsored by the Latin American Business Association at Columbia.

"Our goal is to find a soccer team in the US and bring Fluminense’s name, jersey, brand, and excellence in soccer management. It can be very positive since here in the US there is a sense of community around local soccer clubs. We are aiming to acquire an American soccer team playing not in the Major League Soccer (MLS) but in one of the two secondary leagues [NASL or USL]."

Costa Rica is using some gamemanship to get back at the U.S. for the Snow Game.  So be it.  They have the power, so they can use it.
