Landon Donovan Guides Galaxy to Win over Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City came to the Home Depot Center sporting a five-game unbeaten streak in which they had prevented their opponents from scoring a single goal. They left Los Angeles a vanquished foe, as the Galaxy needed less than 30 minutes to score on Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and break through what had appeared over the past month to be an impenetrable defensive wall. Landon Donovan added a second goal for the home side as they cruised to a 2-0 shutout in front of over 25,000 fans on Saturday night.

Donovan, who has been rounding into form after returning a month into the season, provided the spark for both goals on the day. Donovan passed the ball on to Marcelo Sarvas for a controversial goal in the 27th minute. After Oriol Rosell slipped trying to collect Benny Feilhaber’s pass in midfield, Sarvas gathered the ball — with what looked to be a handball, unnoticed by referee Jair Marrufo — and passed on to Donovan. The veteran played on, cruising down the left flank and beat Aurelien Collin as he angled into the box before finding Sarvas for the return ball on the tap-in.

The Galaxy would score again in the second half, obliterating Kansas City’s goals-against average in the process. Donovan would get a goal of his own, as he finished off a move by Sarvas and Robbie Keane on the counterattack in the 74th minute. Sporting continued to try to crack Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, but the wily Italian was forced into service just twice and earned his third clean sheet of the season. With the Galaxy running on all cylinders and fielding their true first team, Sporting looked thoroughly outclassed throughout the match.
