The wait is officially over for U.S. Soccer fans. Head Coach, Jurgen Klinsmann has officially named his 30-man roster that he is taking to camp before the World Cup.
There certainly were many players on the roster that fans and critics expected. Several “bubble” players also made the roster, causing many fans to question what exactly Klinsmann was thinking.
The USMNT 30-man roster has the squad broken down as follows. Three goalkeepers, 11 defenders, 10 midfielders and six forwards. This squad is certainly surprising with all the defenders that Klinsmann is bringing into camp. One player on the defense that made the roster, John Brooks, is certainly a surprise addition. For those of you who voted during the “USMNT Poll Question: Who Should Go Home?” Poll, you will remember that Brooks was voted the most likely to not make the World Cup roster. Obviously, there is still time for that to happen, but the thought of him even receiving a call-up is incredibly surprising.
Another choice, or lack there of, was the absence of forward, Eddie Johnson. His absence from the team is not surprising to most, especially considering his lack on production this season for D.C. United and his off field problems of running his mouth. Johnson is not the same, talented striker he once was, just a few seasons ago. If he had been selected, it would have caused more controversy then his not being picked. Thankfully, Klinsmann made the right call with his choice.
Julian Green will be given another chance to prove what he is capable of doing at the international level. His small showing during the USA vs. Mexico game a few months ago was a good start, but certainly should that he needs to gain more experience. USMNT fans will be looking to see the young star get important minutes during the two matches before the final cuts are made. Having Green on the final roster would be a smart idea, but the young attacker must earn his spot.
Here is the official USMNT 30-man roster heading into World Cup camp.
