USMNT: Blueprint To Beating Portugal

This Sunday the USMNT face Portugal, with a win they put themselves six points ahead of Portugal and possibly six points ahead of Ghana should Germany beat them, which would mean the USA would advance on through the “Group Of Death” and defy the odds that the so called pundits set so high.  However it isn’t going to be a cakewalk for the Americans, as they are going to need all hands on deck if they’re going to stop the world’s best player, Cristiano Ronaldo, as he will be angry.

STEP 1:  Attack!   The USMNT need to have Portugal on their heels from the get go, they will be without star defender Pepe, and midfielder Fabio Coentrao.  Ronaldo is also dealing with a knee injury that will probably be lingering come Sunday, so the USMNT needs to come out and establish dominance from the jump.

STEP 2:  Be weary of the counter attack.   Portugal is lethal on the counter attack for one reason and one reason only: Ronaldo.  The man is the best in the world right now and even with an injury he can still get out and attack, and with how the full backs have been playing for the USMNT, they’re going to have their work cut out for them.

STEP 3:  Double, if not triple team Cristiano.   When Bosnia faced Argentina, they were up against Lionel Messi, the co best player in the world, and for most of the match, Bosnia were great in defending Leo.  How?  They swarmed Messi every single time he touched the ball, sent two, three, even four defenders right on him every time the ball was at Leo’s feet.  That’s what the USA need to do against Ronaldo, become a pack of wolves.  As soon as Cristiano touches the ball, send the hounds for him.

STEP 4:  Pray.  You could employ all the tactics and strategies you want against a top five team in the World, but you are also going to need a ton of luck.  Ronaldo will get his, it is up to the USA to fight and get theirs as well, Michael Bradley needs to show up, as he was M.I.A. in the Ghana game.  If the stars can align and it really is meant to be for the Americans, then there is no reason why the USMNT shouldn’t walk away with this game with 3 points.  It can be done.

The USMNT can beat Portugal, they can also afford a draw due to the goal difference thanks to the Germans, but the USA would much prefer three points, and come Sunday, we could be seeing the USA walk out the group of death successful.
