POST GAME REPORT: A.S. Roma vs Manchester United

It was Manchester United who beat A.S. Roma 3-2 in Denver, Colorado and thanks to the amazing people here at Fansided, I got to experience it live from the press box.   If you’re a United fan you’ll probably be 50/50 about this performance.   On one hand, the Mata/Rooney combination looks to be great when Mata is in the hole.  On the other hand the defense was shaky and if Van Gaal wants to run with 3 CB’s in the back then it’s going to take near perfection to work in the PL.

For Roma, they struggled a bit to stay onside, they played a lot of defense in the first half but did an amazing job of pressuring the United defense in the second half.  It is also worth noting Pjanic’s absolutely stunning goal from what might have been 70 yards out, catching keeper Ben Amos completely off guard.  It was a good showing from Roma, expect them to stay in CL position in Serie A.

Man United was obviously affected by the warm weather and altitude of Denver as Louis Van Gaal put it “We are not used to this hot weather. I think we didn’t play a good match because of the height of the stadium, the air, because all my good passers failed today.”  fortunately for United fans, they don’t play all their games at 2 PM in the middle of the Summer.

Van Gaal also didn’t like the fact that the game was in the middle of the afternoon, stating “I said when the World Cup was here in ‘94 it wasn’t wise to play here at noon. America has a top sports climate but you have to play football at the right time. When you are 3-0 ahead, the only thing you have to do is keep the ball in possession and then the opponent has to run and run and run. It’s very difficult in this hot weather to do that.”

Manchester United will take on Real Madrid next Saturday in Michigan and if United doesn’t want to concede a ton of goals, they will have to field their best possible lineup next week and it starts with the defenders, so expect to see Chris Smalling, who was captain after Tom Cleverly was taken off possibly due to the climate.
