Philadelphia Union Decline Options On Five Players

facebooktwitterreddit

On Monday (finally I might add), the Philadelphia Union announced they declined options on five players. Fred, Corben Bone, Conor Casey, Brian Brown and Christhian Hernandez’s were all declined and will not be with the team come 2015 provided they do not sign a new deal with the team. Brian Carroll has also been announced as being out of contract.

Conor Casey has been the primary target for the past 2 seasons and performed well since the Union acquired him. He, along with Sebastien Le Toux, enjoyed a very productive summer this year. it became clear though that as the season went on, his body just could not hold up with the demands of the MLS season. Casey has done this city well, but it is time to move on from him and get younger legs up front.

More from MLS

Brian Brown was here on loan from Jamaica where he scored two goals, both against Sporting Kansas City. He looked to have some promise, but he did have trouble adjusting to physicality on the league compared to the Jamaican premier league. Fred had some good moments during the season, but he was used less and less as the season went on. His second stint with the Union is now over.

Corben Bone’s time in Philly is also up after being selected by the Union in the re-entry draft almost one year ago. He never really earned a chance in Philly, only being used as sub two times before being loaned out to USL PRO side, Wilmington Hammerheads. His biggest accomplishment in Philly is getting a red card within minutes of coming on as sub against Sporting Kansas City.

  • A few weeks ago, Kevin Kinkead reported that one or more of the Union homegrown players would not be back with the team in 2015. Now we know Christhian Hernandez is one of them. He was acquired in 2012 and played in two games that season, totaling just under 30 minutes of playing time. He has not played with the first team since now he is gone.

As for Brian Carroll, Jim Curtin may make a push to resign him at a big pay cut depending on if Carroll would accept, but Curtin has been high on his veteran leadership since taking over. Expect the Philadelphia Union to just be getting started making roster decisions today, as many more are expected.
