Former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes got the sack today from Real Sociedad’s ownership. Most believe it is only a matter of time before he makes his return to England for his next managerial role. The interesting question isn’t whether or not he will make a return to England, but what club he might next preside over. The sometimes boring Moyes would be wise to spurn the Premier League and cast his lot with Championship side QPR.

David Moyes is a skilled football manager. You may be bored by his personality and his tactics, but don’t let that cloud your view of his managerial record. He had a distinguished career at Everton that spanned over a decade and even his often-criticized time at Manchester United wasn’t as bad as most fans would have you believe. In the right environment, Moyes can be a super manager.

Most assume that he will try to return to the Premier League for his next job. This is a perfectly logical idea since it’s where most of his managerial experience lies. Moyes must be careful to pick the right job for his next post. Jumping back into the Premier League limelight just for the sake of being in England’s top flight would be a foolish mistake.

Moyes needs to find a club where he can be comfortable. He doesn’t have the big-time personality to take on, say, Chelsea post-Mourinho. I don’t even think he’s the type of man I want in a relegation battle. The owner that selects Moyes as their next manager needs to be patient and understanding of his process. Moyes is at his best as a builder.

That’s what makes QPR the perfect fit for him. They have been a side without a plan for a few years now. Just look at their roster, it’s a jumble of high-priced veterans and youngsters. They’ve tried to cobble teams together with big money to avoid relegation and it just hasn’t worked out. They’ve been ambitious to their credit, but they’ve gone about it the wrong way. They’ve got the resources, but haven’t had the right brain. Moyes would be just that.

Moyes would implement a system at QPR that could be their path to not only promotion, but long-term Premier League survival. The club could provide him with similar resources that he enjoyed in his earlier days at Everton so he wouldn’t require a substantial spending increase. Instead he could mold the roster in his image. He could build a team not only for year one of his tenure, but looking ahead to year four. This is what QPR needs if they’re going to fulfill their potential as a club.

There will be flashier options and names out there for both QPR and David Moyes in the coming days, but both would be wise to ignore them. Their union could be the perfect marriage of pragmatism that would bring QPR back to the Premier League and Moyes reputation up from the gutter.
