Antoine Griezmann’s double sends Atletico Madrid past FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinal

It was a stunner in the Champions League as Atletico Madrid knocked out the defending champions FC Barcelona with a scoreline of 2-0 to win 3-2 on aggregate and advance to the semi-finals. Diego Simeone finally has his first win against Luis Enrique and it could not have come at a better time. Barcelona failed to bounce back after their stunning loss to Real Sociedad on the weekend.

Atletico Madrid pounced on FC Barcelona from the start. The Catalans looked weak and Atletico took advantage of that from the get go. It was Antoine Griezmann who started off the scoring for Atletico as he towered over the Barca defense and headed a ball past Marc-André ter Stegen for the first goal. It was an important goal at that as it gave Atletico Madrid the lead via away goals.

The second half brought a similar vibe as the first half as Barcelona looked stunned and flustered against Atletico’s game plan. Griezmann sealed the deal with a penalty in the 89th minute and Atletico Madrid were able to walk away with the win, but not without some controversy. Gabi blocked a shot with his hand and it was ruled just outside of the box. But replay showed he was actually inside the box. Although Barcelona players were furious with the call, it seemed like karma given that Andres Iniesta wasn’t sent off for his deliberate handball, which led to the penalty by Griezmann.

Here are five things we learned from the game.
