Manchester United are willing to ship David de Gea to Real Madrid

For most of the last year, Manchester United have been steadfast in their refusal to ship keeper David de Gea to Real Madrid. Now, reports are claiming that the Premier League giants are willing to cede to Los Blancos’ demands if they include one key player in a swap deal.

Reports from Spain (via the Manchester Evening news) allege that United will send de Gea to Spain if they can get Casemiro in return. Of course, United aren’t willing to make the transaction a simple swap. They’d still want Real Madrid to stump upwards of £60 million to complete the deal.

While I’m a bit surprised that United have changed their stance, but their desire to sign Casemiro makes a lot of sense. The talented Brazilian midfielder could be the perfect complement to Paul Pogba in the middle of Jose Mourinho’s formation.

Casemiro’s stellar defensive play would allow Pogba the freedom to roam further up the pitch. Some Premier League fans have been critical of the Frenchman’s performance this season, but his talent is undeniable. The more freedom Mourinho can give him, the more brilliance he’s likely to receive from Pogba.

Even if United are successful in getting Casemiro in the deal, losing de Gea would still be a critical blow. It’s not as if keepers of his caliber are growing on trees. Finding a new netminder would prove to be a difficult, and very expensive proposition for Mourinho’s club.

Then again, £60 million is enough cash to purchase almost any keeper in the world. It won’t be enough to sign a player with the pedigree of de Gea, or even of Thibaut Courtois, but it should allow United to purchase a very capable replacement. The identity of that man isn’t clear at the moment, but you have to believe Ed Woodward has a number of potential candidates in mind.

Next: Jose Mourinho is still playing mind games

David de Gea may finally get his dream move to Madrid this summer, but he won’t come to Los Blancos on the cheap. Acquiring the keeper of their dreams will cost them one of their most promising young midfielders.y
