Real Madrid desperately want to sign Kylian Mbappe

Arsenal fans were pretty excited about their club’s £87 million bid for Monaco star Kylian Mbappe. Unfortunately for the Gunners, Los Blancos have rendered their bid irrelevant.

Reports from England claim that Zinedine Zidane’s club have lodged a massive £117 million bid for the talented French starlet. Arsene Wenger may enjoy a reputation of developing young, French talent, but he’s not going to be a serious contender for Mbappe unless he drastically improves Arsenal’s current offer.

The precocious French striker doesn’t seem at all bothered by all the attention. When asked about Real Madrid’s interest he simply commented that the La Liga giants have been interested in him for years. If he’s truly affected by all the attention, he isn’t showing it.

After all, he put on an amazing performance in his most recent match against England. He used his pace and trickery on the ball to flummox Gareth Southgate’s back line. Frankly, the Three Lions were fortunate that Mbappe didn’t carve them up worse than he actually did. The final 3-2 score line was relatively tame compared to what it could have been.

More from Real Madrid

Of course, no one who watched Mbappe play for Monaco this year is remotely surprised. He lit Ligue 1 on fire for the French champions with 15 goals and eight assists. That’s a pretty solid return for a striker who is still just 18 years of age.

There’s little doubt that he can blossom into a world-class player no matter what club he signs for this summer. Even if he stays at Monaco he’s likely going to continue his emergence. Both Arsenal and Real Madrid should be highly motivated to win his signature.

That begs the question why Arsenal haven’t chosen to table a serious offer. Yes, it would require a mountain of cash, but we’ve been repeatedly told that the club have a massive financial reserve. If Wenger isn’t willing to spend money on a talent like Mbappe, who will he ever spend it on?

The likely explanation is that Arsenal aren’t all that serious about winning this transfer race. The massive bid did wonders to placate their unhappy fan base, but it doesn’t expose the club to any real risk. Trailing Real Madrid by £30 million pounds is enough reason for Monaco to choose to send him to Real Madrid. The Gunners’ lack of Champions League football is a good enough reason for Mbappe to choose Spain over England.
