U.S. Versus Honduras Tweet Reaction
By Doug Smith
Heading into yesterday’s match against Honduras, the U.S. Soccer fan base seemed to have a cautious optimism. It was clear they knew that the first hex World Cup qualifying match was going to be tough, especially in a hostile environment. Even as the starting lineup was announced the general reaction was that it was time for a change so starting Omar Gonzalez ahead of Carlos Bocanegra was accepted. The question became the absence of leadership. The ebb and flow of emotion witnessed through social media was dramatic and when the final whistle blew with Honduras victorious 2-1 the reaction was even more emotional.
The starting lineup was optimistic but they struggled. Geoff Cameron was not in the game. A late reaction by Gonzalez was one of the reasons Honduras took the lead in the second half. However, the biggest question many had once the lineup was revealed before kick off was the exclusion of Graham Zusi. Obviously hindsight is 20/20.

This is the jet lag argument, but really it is hard to say that these players are the reason the team lost. Jozy Altidore had a decent game considering the quality around him today.
It was much more of a team effort in the loss, unfortunately. These statistics may add to that point.
The team just lost focus in the second half and communication broke down. It is hard to say there was one real reason or a couple players to identify as the reason for the loss.
The result yesterday is a bigger issue of focus and determination that needs to be resolved quickly. Some pondered if Landon Donovan’s presence could have changed the attitude. His current dedication may not be the answer either.
With zero points after the first match, each of the following matches become much more important.
It sure does look like this will come down to the last match at this rate. March 22 in Colorado is virtually a must win. Yet some remain optimistic.
