Chelsea FC finished their 2013/2014 English Premier League campaign in third place, just behind Liverpool and Manchester City. While the Blues played a fantastic season, earning 82 total points, and posting a final record of 25-7-6, the club fell just five points shy of capturing another EPL title. Time has past, players have come and gone, but one thing still remains the same, Chelsea are heavy favorites to win this year’s EPL title.

Jose Mourinho told many people last season that his team would finish in third place. Mourinho stated that he did not believe his club was good enough to be a top two club, little did he know how right he was.

A new season is upon us, and Chelsea will begin their quest for another run at an EPL title. New players are ready, and the squad is beginning to look incredibly dangerous and rich with talent….it is amazing what money truly can buy.

Transfer season saw three big name players make their way to the Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, and Didier Drogba. The club also bid farewell to defender, David Luiz, who joined PSG in France. Even without Luiz, the Chelsea defense is very talented and full of promising players.

More from Chelsea FC

John Terry (34), the first name people think of when asked to name a Chelsea defender, will need to prove he still has what it takes to be successful at such a high level. Along with Terry, Chelsea have, Gary Cahill, Filipe Luis, Branislav Ivanovic, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nathan Ake, and Kurt Zouma. The varying level of young and old players make for a quality group of defenders. Chelsea only allowed 27 goals last season, best among all EPL teams. The Blues were also one of three teams to only lose one match at home last season, City and Arsenal were the other two clubs.

One of the most talked about positions at Chelsea this coming season is goalkeeper. Peter Cech, recorded 21 clean sheets last season, and conceded 35 total goals. The club also returns Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, who was on loan to Atletico Madrid last season. Courtois established himself as a top goalkeeper in the world with his stellar performances for club and country this past year. The current rumor is that Courtois will be the starter, because Cech may leave the club in the coming weeks.

Aside from the defense, Chelsea had no problems scoring goals last season. The club tallied 71 total goals during their EPL campaign. Belgian midfielder, Eden Hazard led the team with 14 goals. Hazard is part of an incredibly talented midfield group that will cause many teams chaos this coming season. Newly signed Fabregas also brings much excitement to the squad, he will look to partner with Hazard and speedy winger, Andre Schurrle. Midfield is the deepest position for Chelsea this season with 12 players listed on the roster.

Chelsea signed the Spanish goal-scoring machine, Costa, from Atletico Madrid, is hopes of reviving Fernando Torres and finally own a dominant striker on the squad. Since the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Everton, Chelsea only own three forwards. There is hope of adding more, but with 12 midfielders on the squad, it does not seem that Mourinho will look to buy anymore forwards.

The Blues have all the pieces to capture their second title in five years, and lead all beating lines by a substantial amount. In Mourinho we trust? It certainly is possible. Chelsea will wow fans and take home this year’s EPL title and re-establish themselves as the best team in England.

Where do you think the Blues will end up this season? Who is the team’s biggest competition to challenge their title hopes?
