3. The Comeback Starts Here, 2010 World Cup vs. Slovenia
It’s not his most famous goal in South Africa. It’s not even from the same game. But if not for this goal, America wouldn’t have been in the position for his next goal to matter so much.
After a dismal first half, America was down 2-0 to Slovenia and re-runs of 2006 were starting to play in fans’ heads. Donovan stopped those flashbacks nearly instantly in the second half, getting behind the Slovenian defense. As he inched closer and closer to the goal, Donovan appeared to be looking for a cross. However, with options limited, Donovan turned to goal and blasted a shot into the roof of the net.
The comeback was on.
