Jozy Altidore Scores First Goal for Sunderland in 10 Months

It might be difficult to imagine a better life than that of a 24 year-old soccer star plying his trade in the world’s biggest league, but believe me when I tell you that Jozy Altidore knows hard times.

It was just over 14 months ago that the American striker was signed by English side Sunderland for an impressive $9 million dollar transfer fee. Sadly, the target man has been goalless for the last 10 of those months.

That changed today though, as Jozy netted a spinning, low shot from the top of the 18 against Stoke City in the Capital One Cup. It wasn’t enough to give Sunderland the victory however, as Stoke went on to score twice to take a 2-1 victory.

That likely won’t dampen the excitement for Altidore though. This is his second start in a league cup match this year, and he also notched an assist in Sunderland’s 3-0 win over Birmingham City in the previous match. He has appeared only as a substitute in Premier League matches and has looked largely ineffectual as Sunderland continue to struggle.

Jozy has been the subject of much derision from Sunderland fans and others on twitter during his goalless drought. Soccer fans are fickle, to be sure, but there was certainly a touch of sarcastic applause today:

I’ve always said soccer fans are the funniest people on the planet!

It’s well know that strikers can be streaky, so American and Sunderland fans alike are only left to hope that Altidore is able to continue this performance in his next Premier League appearance.

At 24, he still has the potential to be a major contributor for the USMNT in the 2018 cycle. It’s also clear that Sunderland are not quite ready to give up on their investment.
