Landon Donovan “Proud” of Tying MLS Assist Record
By Phil Naegely
The myth, the man, the legend.
It is clear that Landon Donovan will arguably go down as the greatest US Men’s National team and Major League Soccer player. He has contributed a lot to the rise of both teams and soccer as a whole in America. On Sunday he added another moment to his rich history by tying the league’s all-time assist record.
“”I’ve had a lot of guys score a lot of goals on my behalf. It’s a credit to all of them too.” – Landon Donovan
While he wasn’t originally credited with the assist on Robbie Keane’s, but was later credited. After it seemed to be unclear if Donovan was officially given his third assist, it was confirmed by the team’s communication staff via Twitter.
Donovan spoke with reporters post-game about match and tying the assist record
"“To get an assist record you have to have a lot of people scoring goals,” Landon Donovan reflecting on the record-tying affair. “It’s not just putting the ball in the right places. It’s people finishing.”"
Keane and Gyasi Zardes did indeed finishes their goals well on Sunday helping Donovan match the assist record.
"“I’ve had a lot of guys score a lot of goals on my behalf,” Landon Donovan responded. “It’s a credit to all of them too.”"
It took some world class finishing on all three goals Donovan assisted on. Zardes could have easily sailed the ball into the stands on his close range shot. Yet, he cooly and calmly sent the ball through the defender’s five hole and into the net.

On Keane’s two goals, it took precise ball control and aim to finish his attempts. Donovan has developed the skill to find his own players and create chances instead of purely being the guy scoring the goals.
Head coach Bruce Arena has noticed this in his legendary veteran.
"“Rarely do you see a player with the combination of being able to score goals and create goals,” said Galaxy coach Bruce Arena. “Those qualities are excellent. He used to be, I thought, purely a goal scorer. He’s a much better creator now. He’s a good passer of the ball. He’s improved. He’s gotten better.” (Quote courtesy Soccer America)"
