3. The Head Coaching Position

In addition to the two player personnel decisions above, Philadelphia needs to make a decision about Jim Curtin. Do they retain him and remove the interim tag, or do they hire a new head coach and keep him on the staff. Earlier this year, it appeared rumors suggested they were going to remove his interim tag. Philadelphia may have been waiting for the right moment to announce such news. However, there hasn’t been a good moment to do so recently.

Personally, I think Curtin deserves a chance as head coach for an entire season. Others may not agree with me citing that it feels like how John Hackworth earned the job two years ago. Curtin is a Philadelphian, he’s related well with the players, and appears to fit the bill.

  • On the other hand, Sakiewicz may not want to do what he’s done in the past. He could go in a different direction by hiring someone from outside the club. In the past, the coach who took over came from within the organization.

Since the 2014 US Open Cup Final, Philly’s play and results have gone down hill. Yet, I don’t think that is Curtin’s fault. The team failed to bring in a high-caliber striker to provide depth up top. Instead they signed M’Bohli as most Philadelphia faithful is aware of.

In addition to deciding Curtin’s future, Philadelphia may make a GM related decision. Nick Sakiewicz is the current GM and has been since the team’s founding and maybe it’s time Sakiewicz steps back from player personnel decisions and hires his successor. Yet, this move most likely won’t come, but is something for Sakiewicz and company to consider.
