When Toronto announced the signing of Jermain Defoe in early January, as well as other big signings such as Gilberto and Michael Bradley, many pegged 2014 as the season for Toronto to finally make the playoffs. The season went a little different than expected though as Gilberto got off to a very slow start and Defoe, while producing for the club when healthy, was injured for much of the season.
Around the time head coach Ryan Nelson was relieved of his duties, questions of Defoe’s status within the club was under question. Rumors began swirling towards the end of the summer transfer window of whether or not Defoe would even make it to the end of the season with Premier League side, QPR, looking like a likely destination.
The deal never materialized though, and Defoe did finish the season with Toronto, playing only a handful of games near the end of the season as he recovered from his groin injury. With the winter transfer window now open, so are the Jermain Defoe rumors and per the Guardian, it looks like Leicester City are now front runners as they look to evade relegation.

With Queens Park Rangers still a possibility, Leicester City have jumped in front as they desperately look for help to score goals. Leicester City is currently dead last in the premier league with only 14 points through their first 20 games. With the Premier league season just over halfway complete, Leicester City need a strong run to avoid relegation as the season progresses and they may be looking towards Defoe for the answer.
Jermain Defoe made his name in the Premier League with West ham United, Portsmouth and perhaps most notably, Tottenham. Defoe is a proven goal scorer in the Premier League, and he could definitely give Leicester City a much needed boost. QPR will definitely still be trying for Defoe, but only if the price is right.
Nothing is a done deal in the transfer world though until the contract is signed so stay tuned to Playing for 90 for all of the transfer news that pops up.
