5.) David Villa (New York City FC 2-0 St. Mirren FC)
Well, David Villa and NYCFC’s official MLS account opened in unofficial fashion this week in an overseas friendly. The Blues have been overseas a few weeks now for preseason training at Manchester City’s facilities. On the agenda for NYC included a friendly vs. Scottish side St. Mirren. New York won with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but more importantly striker David Villa got on the score sheet. The goal wasn’t exactly mind-blowing, but the Spanish striker controlled a low cross, keeping the ball close with his first touch and sending it to the back of the net with his 2nd.
Villa joined NYCFC from Spanish reigning champions Atletico Madrid last year following the conclusion of the Champion’s League. After a brief stint in Australia with sister club Melbourne City, Villa seems raring and ready to go for the club’s MLS Regular Season Opener this March against expansion counterpart Orlando City SC. Until then, City fans will take comfort in his terrific preseason form, including his 2 goals in 4 appearances for Melbourne.
