Of these ideas, some situational rotations feel more likely or inevitable than others. I can easily believe that Harris gets at least the first start or two, given that Solo has missed a fair amount of time training with the team and might not be “match fit.” It’s clear that Engen is the 3rd CB of this team. I think Rapinoe long ago established her consistent utility, particularly in pressing in from the outer edges of the attacking third. There’s no reason we won’t see even more evidence of Press’ tendency to create havoc among defenses already overwhelmed with trying to contain a galloping Morgan and a bulldozing LeRoux.

And then, there are some rotations that will probably never see the light of day. I don’t know what anyone can do to get Kelley O’Hara back on the radar for the UWSNT coaching staff. Despite playing every minute of the 2012 Olympics, O’Hara’s stock appears to have fallen tremendously at the left back position. I also think Brian will end up with a few more starts than I’d give her, and I expect that Julie Johnston and Amy Rodriguez will continue to ride the bench for the foreseeable future.

It also seems like a sure bet to assume that Abby Wambach will start as many games as possible. It has long been assumed that the mere presence of Abby on the pitch changes the very character of the US, though it’s unclear whether that change is ultimately for the better. Indeed, as a leader, she is undeniably capable of commanding the attention and the best efforts of this team. We will have to see how this team shakes off their slate of disappointing performances from the past few months.

The US will play in four matches as participants in this year’s Algarve Cup, all of which are scheduled to be shown on Fox Sports 1. The first match, against Norway, will take place on Wednesday, March 4 at 2pm EST.
