The Boston Breakers announced today that they have signed forward Stephanie McCaffrey to a contract, however, as per team and league policy, no details were made available. McCaffrey, the number five overall pick in the 2015 NWSL draft was acquired by the Breakers from the Chicago Red Stars in exchange for the ninth and eleventh picks. A natural goal scorer while at Boston College, she brings some much needed punch to a lacking Boston attack.
“We are very pleased with Stephanie’s signing as she exemplifies what the Breakers brand is all about,” Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said. “Stephanie is a young talented, aggressive player who enjoys her football especially scoring goals.”

McCaffrey will need to bring her aggressive, goal scoring game to Boston who went 6-16 in 2014. Boston only scored thirty-seven goals on the year and were shut out six times. Having played for and starred at nearby Boston College, it is hoped that McCaffrey will be a local draw as well as a prolific scorer. “The fact that she is a local product, a standout at Boston College and a regular the Breakers U-23 team is exactly what the Breakers club is working to establish,” Durkin added. “I think that Stephanie will be not only a success on the field, but an inspiration to young girls in our club and the greater Boston area.”
The former Boston College star played the last two summers on the Boston Breakers College Academy team in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). She finished as one of the top scorers in the WPSL in 2013, tallying 16 goals. That season, McCaffrey scored two hat tricks in her first four games and led the team to the conference finals. In two seasons with the Breakers Academy, McCaffrey amassed 23 goals.During her career at Boston College, McCaffrey scored 32 goals (fifth all-time at the school) and became just the fourth player to score 90 or more points in program history. A two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team honoree, McCaffrey was the team’s second leading scorer (six goals) in 2014. She led the Eagles with seven assists and 19 points
She joins a crowded group of forwards that include fellow 2015 draft choices Jamia Fields, Bianca Brinson, Stephanie Verdoia as well as international signees Ketlen Wiggers and Rafinha, both from Brazil. Returning are veterans Mollie Pathman (1 assist in 1,519 minutes), Nkem Ezurike (2 goals), fourth leading scorer on the team Katie Schoepfer (4 goals) and recent acquisitions Suzanne Pires (6 goals and 5 assists for the reserve team) and Morgan Marlborough (2 goals on just 5 shots for FC Kansas City). While it’s a crowded group, it’s a group sorely lacking a top goal scorer which McCaffrey can provide.
