The Premier League Game of Thrones
By Ryan Wrenn
John Carter – Newcastle
Projected Finish: 15th
How’d he do?
Newcastle’s transition after the departure after Alan Pardew was never going to be an easy one. Rumors abounded that owner Mike Ashley might try to poach Steve Bruce from Hull or otherwise find Pardew’s long term replacement mid-season. Such appointments are rarely successful (Pardew and Sherwood aside), and Ashley perhaps wisely relied on Newcastle’s relatively secure position in mid-table to hold them until the end of the season. Carver’s essentially a placeholder until a more capable manager is brought in, and his performances more or less live up to that label. His Newcastle team has won twice since his appointment in January and currently sit atop a seven game losing streak.
Season Highlight: If you had to choose, you’d probably say the 1-0 win over Sherwood’s Villa in late February.
Season Lowlight: Each one of Newcastle’s last seven consecutive losses.
Future?
So out. Carver will be replaced over the summer almost without question.
