Boston Breakers Fall to Western New York Flash 3-1

The Boston Breakers took an early lead Saturday night against the Western New York Flash, but the home side came back with three unanswered goals to secure a 3-1 win at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.

In similar fashion that  they displayed in last week’s win over Houston, the Breakers struck first for an early lead. In the  games’ 15th minute, Kristie Mewis played the ball out wide to  rookie Stephanie McCaffrey, who then took on Flash defender Brittany Taylor one-on-one. McCaffrey came into the box, worked around Taylor, and found Morgan Marlborough darting inside. Marlborough one-timed McCaffrey’s pass off the inside of her right foot past Sabrina D’Angelo for the 1-0 lead. For Marlborough, it was her first goal as a Breaker, and the assist was McCaffrey’s team-leading second of the season.

  • The Flash equalized eight minutes later, as Becky Edwards placed a ball into the box, and Samantha Mewis headed it past Alyssa Naeher to make it a 1-1 game.

Just past the hour mark, Edwards played Lynn Williams into the box. Williams took a few touches before sending it over to Edwards, who then scored to give the Flash a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute.

Boston had a pair of chances late, both propelled by Mewis. In the 80th minute, she served up a free kick from distance that went to the far post, but D’Angelo came out to pick it off. Four minutes later, Mewis hit a ball from 20 yards out that seemed to dip as it came at D’Angelo, but the rookie keeper stayed sharp and made the save.

Bracketed between those chances by the Breakers, the Flash countered and had a wide open look on goal, only to be denied by a save from defender Julie King. Williams dribbled into the box, and Naeher came out, got a hand on the ball to briefly turn away Williams, but Williams got the ball back and put a shot on goal. King, defending the Boston goal on the line, slid to her right and got a foot on Williams’ shot.

But the Flash put the game away in the 87th minute when Sydney Leroux beat Naeher near post, just sneaking it past Naeher for the 3-1 final.

The Breakers take on the Chicago Red Stars May 9 on the road before returning home for a three game stretch, while the Flash welcome FC Kansas City.
