Čech Falters

Watching Petr Čech Sunday was reminiscent of watching Iker Casillas at his worst during his last two seasons with Real Madrid. The Spain number one was utterly dominant in Euro 2012, turning in one of the better performances ever by a goalkeeper in a major international competition. Soon thereafter though, something changed. He lost his starting role at Real and when he did make an appearance they almost invariably featured some howler of a mistake. Almost overnight, the world’s best goalkeeper had lost his touch.

That is probably not what’s happening with Čech, even if the two keeper’s stories seem remarkably similar. Nevertheless there is a real worry for Arsenal that their new man between the sticks might not be up for the type of defensive masterclass Arsene Wenger wants to put on this term. He will need to avoid such errors in the coming weeks if he wants to avoid losing his job to the lying-in-wait Davide Ospina.
