Losers: Simon Hooper and Norwich City

Another debut that made headlines in the first week of the new Premier League season was that of referee Simon Hooper, who’s first Premier League match was Crystal Palace at Norwich City.

Crystal Palace had a commanding 2-0 lead on the road, but Norwich City began to fight back in the second half.

Substitute Nathan Redmond got one back for the home team through a long strike, and it looked like the Canaries were about to make a run to salvage a point.

It looked like Norwich had tied the game through striker Cameron Jerome, but the goal was called off by Hooper, who judged that Jerome had stuck his boot too high.

Hooper faced a huge inquest from Norwich City players, and Crystal Palace would go on to put the game away through new signing Yohan Cabaye, and would leave with a 3-1 victory.

Did Hooper rob Norwich of a point? Possibly.

Whether or not he did, it was definitely a tough debut for the referee.
