MANCHESTER UNITED

Memphis Depay. Bastian Schweinsteiger. Morgan Schneiderlin. Anthony Martial.

Few clubs have spent the way Manchester United have thus far, but retaining David De Gea after Real Madrid failed to register the player in time may be the biggest of all for the Red Devils.

Martial was confirmed today as the most expensive teenager in history, and Depay and Schweinsteiger have already put in shifts worthy of praise from the regulars at Old Trafford, but United’s biggest deal has to be the one that failed and leaves De Gea at their disposal for another PL campaign. True, De Gea will escape on a free at the end of the year and that may end up being best for Madrid when all is said and done, but now the Spanish giants look just plain silly after not being able to capture United’s #1 and registering him in time.

Anthony Martial is young, and no one can justify the amount of money Manchester United threw at AS Monaco to secure his services, but few will be running their mouths if Martial ends up helping Rooney and playing the way LvG hopes. Overall, it took far too long and far too much money, but United have a second striker, a solid midfield, and have kept David De Gea, but can they get to the top four?
