Southampton-B+

Ronald Koeman has done a good job on the South Coast this season and has his Saints slightly outperforming their preseason expectations. Graziano Pelle has been an imposing front man and Virgil Van Dijk has anchored a solid defense. Still, I’m afraid we’ve seen more of the same for Southampton on the season. They are pretty good and can be exceedingly dangerous, but they don’t actually frighten anyone.

They should be in for a comfortable Europa League qualification based on their talent and their results sit at that exact spot. We keep waiting for Southampton to explode and really threaten the top four and it just doesn’t seem to happen. Perhaps that’s down to the players they’ve sold over the past several seasons, but whatever the reason, I’m never quite satisfied.

Still, you have to give Koeman credit for steering the ship in the wake of significant player turnover so they get a B+ on the season.
