Willian-Chelsea

This one is just an obvious selection. Even as Chelsea struggled, Willian’s play continued to be outstanding. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he was one of the club’s only highlights at the end of Mourinho’s tenure.

Willian’s strength is creativity from the wing, and that’s exactly what Manchester United has lacked under Van Gaal. As I detailed in an article over the weekend, Juan Mata certainly won’t be in the side of Mourinho arrives at United and he hasn’t been effective playing out wide anyway. Willian could slot right into Mata’s position and give the side much more flair from wide positions. It would be a simple like-for-like substitution.

The only question I have about this potential move is whether or not Chelsea would deal with Mourinho on the transfer market. It seems that Roman Abramovich left things on reasonable terms with his former manager, but who knows what happened behind closed doors. It’s not as if Mourinho has a reputation for handling departures with tack and grace. It would be easy to see Chelsea making a blanket policy not to have any transfer business with Mourinho through at least the December window.

I’m certain that if Mourinho makes the move to United one of his first calls would be to his Brazilian talisman. The only question is whether or not he could get the transfer deal done.
