Christian Benteke-Liverpool

Mourinho wouldn’t only be tempted to move for current Chelsea players if he were to make the move to United. He’d also be keen to pick off Premier League talent from a variety of other squads. In this case, he’d be seizing on the poor fit between Benteke and Jurgen Klopp.

United isn’t exactly blessed with a stable situation at striker. Anthony Martial has been outstanding on the year, but there are fair questions as to whether or not he can hold up through an entire Premier League season at his age. On the other hand, Wayne Rooney is clearly not the player he used to be as a number nine. He still has a role to play for United, even under Mourinho, but his future lies behind the striker in the number ten role.

Benteke would be the perfect foil to Martial. He’s a big, bruising, but skilled striker who has demonstrated real quality in the Premier League. The only reason he’s potentially even available is because he isn’t the ideal number nine for Klopp’s high pressing system. It’s certainly not for lack of talent.

Ironically, the way Benteke plays is very similar to how Costa performed last year as Chelsea won the title. If Mourinho wanted to replicate that ruthlessly efficient side he’d need to find a front man to play the Costa role. Benteke would be perfect.
