FC Barcelona man Sandro Ramirez might not be the immediate answer for Tottenham, but he’s a great project for Mauricio Pochettino

Given what’s at stake for Tottenham this season it’s easy to want the club to focus all of its attention on what incoming players would be best for Spurs right now. Fortunately, the powers that be at White Hart Lane are taking more of a long view as evidenced by their interest in FC Barcelona front man Sandro Ramirez.

Tottenham certainly need striking cover for Harry Kane in the January transfer window and have been rumored with quite a few targets already. Sandro is the latest name to pop up in the tabloids and is one of the names that should have Spurs fans most excited. He’s far from a finished product and might not be the ideal player to help Tottenham qualify for the Champions League this season, but he could be a star for the club for years to come.

First let’s be clear about what Sandro is not. He is not a finished article that will come in and set the Premier League on fire in January. If Tottenham is able to sign him fans must be prepared to be patient with their expectations. He is only 20-years-old after all. If he’d already managed to fulfill his sizable potential he’d likely be out of Daniel Levy’s price range.

Now that we’ve covered what he isn’t, let’s take a look at the upside for the young Spaniard. He is a tremendous talent that even at a young age, has managed to force his way in a super-talented Barcelona squad. He’s got ten appearances on the season for the Spanish giants which is remarkable given his age and the talent in front of him. It’s certainly not easy to break into a side ahead of players like Neymar, Suarez and Messi.

He is a player that has above average pace on the pitch and a ton of skill. He can play up front as a stand-alone striker but can also play out on the wing in Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 formation. This fits the pattern of what Pochettino has looked to acquire to provide cover for Kane. There’s been very little reported interest in players that can only play as a number nine, but quite a few names have popped out who can play up top or wide. Sandro fits the profile of what Pochettino has been searching for perfectly.

Sandro isn’t the perfect purchase for Tottenham to make if they’re just concerned with what happens the rest of this season. It very well may be the perfect purchase for a manager who’s looking to build a squad that can contend for Premier League titles for years to come.
