Rumored Chelsea-Atletico Madrid swap deal makes sense
It might just be a rumor but a swap deal between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid involving Diego Costa, Pedro and Jackson Martinez makes a lot of sense
Rumors of swap deals in the world of football rarely come to fruition, but they’re often fun to consider. The rumored swap deal between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid that would see Diego Costa and Pedro head to Spain, with Jackson Martinez coming to England makes a lot of sense for both sides.
As I said, pulling these sorts of deals off is pretty rare, but this one is more interesting than most. Goal.com has the report that would see three of football’s biggest stars heading to new clubs.
This would be a classic case of providing talented football players a fresh start somewhere else in hopes of helping them rediscover their form. None of these players are enjoying good spells with their current clubs so it makes sense to try to jump-start their games with a big move.

The Chelsea pair of Costa and Pedro have struggled both pre and post-Jose Mourinho’s firing. Costa, to be fair, has seen an uptick in his play since Guus Hiddink took over, but he still looks a shell of his former self. It’s long been rumored that Atletico would like to bring him back to the club where he made his name.
Pedro too, has been mired in a slump of sorts at Chelsea. While he’s been much better than many of their fans realize, he still hasn’t been the dynamic player they expected when he was brought in from Barcelona. It’s also alleged that he is homesick for Spain which gives this deal even more logic.

On the flip side, Jackson Martinez has struggled mightily for Atletico. He’s only managed two goals in 14 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone’s side and he’s an afterthought in their current team selection. He’d be foolish not to be looking for a move to kick-start his career.
Still, it stands to reason that Chelsea would have to receive something else to sweeten the deal. They’d be foolish to make the two-for-one swap that’s described here. Atletico could always include some cash to make the deal more even or perhaps even including a young prospect such as Angel Correa or Oliver Torres. If the La Liga side were willing to include a player like that it would make Chelsea much more motivated to get a deal done.
The truth is, that both of these big clubs have big-name players struggling so it’s natural for rumors to pop up. There may be no substance to the report, but a swap deal between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid involving such big-name players would be worth exploring for both sides.
Would you make this swap deal if you were either Chelsea or Atletico Madrid? If not, what could either side add to the proposed arrangement to make the move palatable? Let us know in the comments field below.
