1. Fire Louis van Gaal

I know this isn’t a transfer deal per se, but it’s the most important change Ed Woodward could make to help Manchester United this transfer window. Van Gaal has a great CV, but it’s not just working for him in the Premier League.

United could let van Gaal hang on until the end of the year and manage a more graceful exit, but that doesn’t really serve their interests. They need to get out in the managerial black market with Chelsea and find their long-term solution.

Even if van Gaal sees out his full contract at Old Trafford, it only leaves him in charge for another year and change. United can’t afford that kind of short-term thinking given the long-term plans that are going to be in place at other top Premier League clubs.

Manchester United fans will absolutely riot if Pep Guardiola replaces Manuel Pellegrini at City this offseason and they are still left with van Gaal in charge. I’m not saying that United can swoop in for Guardiola, but they need to have someone better to offer their fans.

Keeping van Gaal at this point is just lazy. They know he can’t deliver them Premier League titles and that’s the standard at Manchester United. They need to get on with it and make a change.
