If Jose Mourinho ends up at Old Trafford, Manchester United fans should expect a reign of chaos

Manchester United fans clamoring for Jose Mourinho to take over for Louis van Gaal might want to rethink that philosophy. If “The Special One” takes over at Old Trafford he’d plunge the legendary club into an unprecedented period of chaos.

Mourinho admitted as much in his latest comments to Sky Sports. He was quoted as saying that “if you are in a club that wins and you want to win again, you must create instability in the winners.” That’s a clear admission that he’d aim to turn things upside down at Old Trafford.

Cynical fans would say that’s exactly what United need at the moment. After all, things aren’t exactly going well for van Gaal at the moment. United currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, a shocking 13 points behind surprise leader Leicester city. I won’t argue that significant change is going to be required of the next manager.

There’s a big difference between making some changes and creating consistent instability though. Any manager taking over at United is going to want to institute some immediate changes. Only Mourinho would want to deliberately cause instability over and over again.

Manchester United enjoyed great success under Sir Alex Ferguson because of the great sense of continuity he fostered at the club. While they can’t expect to find another manager exactly like Sir Alex, the club would be foolish to ignore their previous blueprint for success.

That means they must avoid hiring a manager like Mourinho at all costs. If they make that type of mistake, they make their club just like Chelsea or Manchester City. They would become just another big money Premier League club instead of the franchise that has been the Premier League gold standard for so long.

That isn’t to say that Mourinho couldn’t come in and inject the club with some short-term success. If they go for the former Chelsea boss, it might even lead to a few trophies over the next couple of seasons. What it won’t do, is to set them up for long-term success.

Whoever succeed Louis van Gaal has to be the right man to set up United for the next decade. The club has to get off the rat race of trying to reinvent themselves every two or three seasons. If they lower themselves to that standard then they lose the significant advantage of their strong brand. The next managerial hire will be critical for Manchester United no matter when it occurs.

Jose Mourinho is the right manager for a lot of Premier League clubs who aren’t blessed with the advantages Manchester United enjoys. If he ends up at Old Trafford he will usher in a reign of chaos that will have disastrous long-term effects.
