4. Best Premier League defense

Spurs have given up just 20 goals in 26 Premier League matches. That makes their defense the stingiest in the Premier League, and that’s a huge boost to the team as it goals for glory.

The Telegraph reports that not only do Tottenham have the best Premier League defense this season, it’s the club’s best defensive start since 1902. That kind of historic effort is needed as clubs try to make history of their own. I’ve already discussed the club’s full backs and keeper, but some real credit has to go to the centre backs as well.

For most of the season, the partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld has patrolled the middle expertly for Tottenham. After Vertonghen’s injury, Austrian Kevin Wimmer has filled in excellently. No matter who’s been Alderweireld’s partner, they’ve been solid.

A lot of that credit most go to Alderweireld, who’s started every Premier League match for Spurs this season. His play has even be so obviously excellent, that former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood recently acknowledged that he might be the best centre back in the league. You know he has to be playing well for even Sherwood to acknowledge it.

The old adage that defense win championships may not be as true as it used to be, but I can tell you that having a great defense definitely helps. Tottenham will hope to ride their stingy defense all the way to a Premier League title.
