4. But the last thirty minutes was poor

A good sixty minutes wiped out by ten frantic minutes

It all seemed good for Wolfsburg as they looked to be cruising with a 3-0 lead away from home and seemed set on advancing to the next round of the Champions League after a great display of football. But that all changed in a matter of ten minutes as Gent struck back with two goals. It will leave Wolfsburg feeling a bit worried about their defending at the back as they gave up two goals and now the tie has suddenly shifted a little bit back towards Gent.

There was nothing Wolfsburg could have done about Sven Kums strike as he hit a rocket and Diego Benaglio had no chance in goal. But the second goal could have been stopped and it was an important one. Being down 3-1 and down 3-2 are two completely different scenarios psychologically for a team and now Gent believe a little bit more that they can still steal this tie away from Wolfsburg.

This brings back shades of Wolfsburg’s last group stage match against Manchester United when a late own goal almost costed Wolfsburg their top spot in the group. Naldo later saved the team with a header to win it in that game but there was no late consolation for Wolfsburg. A 3-2 win is good but it would have been a whole lot better for Wolfsburg had it been 3-0 or just 3-1.
