2. Ilkay Gundogan vs. Dele Alli
If Tottenham’s prize youngster wasn’t going to miss the first match due to yellow card accumulation I’d have this match-up as the most important of the tie. Even with the knowledge that Alli will miss the first leg, it’s still going to be a crucial battle in determining the winner of the return leg.
I almost feel cheated that we won’t get the chance to watch Gundogan and Alli battle over two legs. They are two of the world’s best midfielders and both happen to be in excellent form as of late.
Gundogan, is the man in the middle that pulls the strings for Dortmund. He may not rack up all that many goals or assists, but he’s often the man who plays the first pass to unlock an opposing defense. His steady play in the middle of the pitch sets the tone for Dortmund’s offense to really shine.
Alli, has proven to be a key element of the Tottenham attack as well. He’s perhaps a bit more flashy than Gundogan, but lacks the experience of his German opponent. His petulance can occasionally get the best of him, but he’s come up big when his team has needed him most this season.
Whichever play can get on the ball more and create for their attack, will go a long way towards determining the winner. You have to give the early advantage to Dortmund here since they will have their midfield engine for both matches, and Tottenham will be forced to play without Alli once.
